Mercedes Schlapp has no easy job in her role as White House adviser for strategic communications. The White House's advisor to strategic communications, Mercedes Schlapp, has to face a variety of challenges. This includes a president who is also the director of his own communications as well as numerous legal issues that could disrupt the messaging strategy. Schlapp is, however, never lost focus on her mission. She is in close contact in conjunction with White House political affairs and committees on legislation and policy shops and the overall communications department to oversee the rollout of policies. She's focused on areas such as school safety, the infrastructure and opiates as well as trade. As a current employee she isn't in contact with many reporters. In March, she received a flurry of interest when it was known that her name would be considered a possible candidate to take over Hope Hicks's position as the director of communication. The fight has been ugly.Mercedes Schlapp doesn't enjoy a smooth job of her position as the White House strategic communications adviser. It's not an easy task to have Mercedes Schlapp as the White House's strategic communications adviser. She is faced with numerous challenges, for instance as a President who also serves as his communication director. Schlapp is keeping her eyes at the end of the tunnel, working on policy implementation with White House staff from the Political and Legislative Affairs team and the policy shop, and broader communications. The focus is on topics like school safety, opioids, infrastructure, and trade. Schlapp doesn't deal with reporters frequently in her current job. But, back in March, she was mentioned to be a possible candidate who would succeed Hope Hicks at the Communications Director job. It was a tense battle. Schlapp's close ally, Tony Sayegh as well as another candidate for the position, also named Tony, started jousting with each other on the news. Schlapp stated that after that the Washington Examiner ran a story which contained negative criticisms of Sayegh she had a discussion with Sayegh.
